Ann Kerr

Ann Kerr is a registered Occupational Therapist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, specializing in the care of people affected by eating disorders; anorexia and bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, and disordered eating; chronic dieting, over and under eating, emotional eating and body image issues. She has received extensive experience and training in her work from the Toronto General Hospital Eating Disorder Programs, Sheena’s Place (where she was the founding Program Director), the Harvard School of Continuing Education and the Jean Baker Miller Institute at Wellesley College, USA.

Ann has worked extensively with people who are trying to normalize their eating and work through the psychologic issues related to this process. She focuses on helping people find significant meaning in their lives by exploring and adapting their environments to accommodate their strengths and weaknesses and values. She uses a number of modalities grounded within a strong, respectful therapeutic relationship. The modalities include cognitive-behavioural approaches, mindfulness and dialectic behavioural therapy. Ann links clients to appropriate resources and builds a team of professionals when necessary; for example, when applying the Maudsley Family-Based Therapy approach.

Ann has also developed an interest in coaching parents to be empowered and effective in the struggle to help their children, no matter what the age, to eat normally and move onto other life transitions.
